The module commences with an introduction to theories of leadership and management, integrating theory with practice and case studies. This will be based on a mixture of lectures, seminars and workshops. The second part of the module is a structured work-related process. Students will analyse leadership and management through engagement in the workplace and reflect on their own practice. Students will be supported by workshops and individual supervision.
Students reflect on leadership through group work, and then on their engagement with real-world organisations. This structured engagement with employment reflects professional requirements for personal and work-related development
On successful completion of the module, students should be able to:
1. identify a range of management processes, linking these to practice (LO1)2. appraise the range of skills required of leaders and managers in various aspects of management and particularly in community organisations (LO2)3. analyse some of the professional, cultural and ethical issues related to the management of community and other organisations (LO3)4. evaluate their own strengths in the context of management and leadership (LO4)5. evaluate key aspects of leadership and management in a work-related context. (LO5)
The assessment is based on two workbooks. The first is 40% of the assessment and based on reflection on leadership in structured groupwork in the classroom. This is 2000 words, and enables students to reflect on leadership and management skills shown in defined tasks.
The second is 60% of the assessment and is based on structured work-related activities. This is 3000 words, and reflects engagement with real-world organisations
