Course Description
This course is an introduction to macroeconomic analysis and its application, where relevant to the Middle East, the Gulf States and the UAE.
The course discusses how the size, composition and distribution of national income are determined, and goes on to explore the problems of inflation and unemployment in a modern economy. The course introduces students to the role of fiscal and monetary policy in the economy and the implications of such government policies. Students will also learn about what drives economic growth and the ups and downs of the business cycle, as well as understanding the importance of international linkages through trade and investment in a globalized world through trade and investment flows.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Analyze the standard of living and the cost of living for different countries using the concepts of real GDP and the different price levels
2. Examine the causes and the effects of inflation and unemployment
3. Explore how productivity affects a country’s growth
4. Investigate what causes business cycle and its interplay with inflation and unemployment
5. Assess the effects of fiscal and monetary policy in the short and the long run using aggregate demand and supply analysis
6. Interpret reliable economic data to conduct basic economic analysis for the UAE and other countries
